Was soll man sich unter der „Albrecht-Bengel-Haus Forschungsgemeinschaft" vorstellen?

Wozu brauchen wir eine Doktorandenarbeit?

Welchen langfristigen Nutzen bringt dieser Arbeitszweig der Gemeinde?

Zunächst gilt die alte Einsicht: Was heute in den Hörsälen vom Katheder gelehrt wird, das wird morgen auf der Kanzel gepredigt. Natürlich wird der Lehrstoff an der Universität nicht einfach eins zu eins auf die Verkündigung übertragen. Aber die grundlegenden Entwicklungen in den wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen der Theologie wirken sich ganz nachhaltig auf den Dienst in der Schule und Gemeinde aus.

Wer also zur Studienbegleitung an der Universität Ja sagt, der muss früher oder später auch den zweiten Schritt tun, und sich den Herausforderungen theologischer Forschung stellen. Das tun wir nun seit fast 50 Jahren seit der Gründung des ABH im Jahr 1969.

Wir erhoffen uns mit guten Gründen, dass die Doktorandenarbeit und andere Forschungsbeiträge, die in der Regel als Bücher gedruckt werden, künftigen Studentinnen und Studenten helfen. Sie können in ihrem Studium die Ergebnisse dieser Publikationen in ihre Arbeit einbeziehen und sie auch in ihren Hausarbeiten zitieren.

Erstens ...

eine große Gemeinschaft von Christen, die im Bengelhaus zusammen leben. Wir haben das neue Gebäude so geplant, dass die Doktorandenarbeit mit ihren Möglichkeiten den Theologiestudierenden vielfältig nützt und umgekehrt auch die Doktoranden das breite Angebot (räumlich und sachlich), der Studentenarbeit nutzen können.

Zweitens ...

bietet die neue Cafeteria Möglichkeiten, sich regelmäßig zum Austausch über Forschungsprojekte zu treffen. Eine stimulierende Gesprächsatmosphäre ist für Doktoranden wichtig. Man kann nicht nur im Zimmer über den Büchern sitzen, sondern ist auf Anregungen und Korrektur durch andere angewiesen.

Drittens ...

bietet die Universitätsbibliothek in Tübingen für das Fach Theologie ein sehr breites und deutschlandweit einzigartiges Angebot an Literatur. Im Bengelhaus haben wir eine Präsenzbibliothek mit über 40.000 Bänden. Für die Doktoranden besteht ein Lesesaal mit Arbeitstischen, Internetanschluss und allem was für eine fruchtbare Forschungsarbeit hilfreich ist.

Viertens ...

können wir mittelfristig bis zu zehn Doktoranden in Appartements bzw. Einzelzimmern aufnehmen.

New Possibilities for Doctoral and Research Projects at the Albrecht Bengel Haus in Tübingen, Germany

1. The Evangelical study center Albrecht Bengel Haus in Tübingen offers a special program for doctoral students and scholars who desire to work at the University of Tübingen in affiliation with the Department of Protestant Theology.

1.1. It is possible either to do a doctorate in Tübingen or simply spend one or several semesters of research there.
1.2. Even doctoral students who are completing their studies at another university or seminary can also come to the Bengel Haus for a research stay of a certain period of time.

2. Founded in 1969 by Evangelical Christians from the Lutheran mainline church, the Albrecht Bengel Haus tutors and counsels theology students during their studies at the University of Tübingen by providing an active Christian communal life, spiritual formation, and supplemental academic programs. The goal of this ministry is to promote Biblically-based and missions-oriented theology. The new research fellowship program now makes this kind of offer available to doctoral students and scholars from around the world.
The main features offered are:
2.1. In-house access to a theological library of around 40,000 volumes. In addition, the theological library section of the University of Tübingen is German's largest in the field of religion.
2.2. Regular meetings of doctoral students and scholars in the Bengel Haus cafeteria provide regular opportunities for discussions on the progress and even difficulties of on-going research. The academic climate created by the Bengel House is designed to enable each participant to make good progress in his / her project. Experts from outside the community will also be invited to advise doctoral students.
2.3. Regular participation in the group devotions and worship services of the house community.
2.4. Participation in spare-time activities such as sports, music, etc.

4. Financing

4.1. No tuition or fees are levied at German universities for doctoral students and visiting scholars.
4.2. Participants in the doctoral program are only required to cover the costs of room rental at the Bengel House and their own living expenses. Current prices are 180 Euros monthly for a single room and, depending on the size, around 430 Euros monthly for a married couples' apartment. As the Bengel Haus itself is supported by donations, no scholarships can be provided. Still, it can advise applicants seeking stipends or scholarships from other institutions.
4.3. International doctoral students must provide proof to German visa and immigration authorities that they can finance the costs of their stay in Germany, including mandatory public health insurance coverage.

5. Admission
5.1. Application forms for admission can be found on-line at: www.bengelhaus.de. Just click on "Doktorandenarbeit".
5.2. Applications should be sent by e-mail to Prof. Rainer Riesner at: . Applications will be processed and reviewed by the Bengel Haus principal and board before admission is granted.

6. Language proficiencies and conditions of admission as doctoral student in the theology department of the University of Tübingen
6.1. Satisfactory proof of proficiency in the German language is required for admission to the doctoral program at the University of Tübingen. This proficiency can be acquired or improved through free German classes provided at the university for one or two semesters. With prior approval of the dean of the theology department, dissertations may accepted in the English language.
6.2. The Bengel Haus gladly advises doctoral students who wish to complete their doctoral work in Tübingen under the supervision of a Tübingen professor with respect to choice of a possible supervisor and feasible research projects. Of course, the final decision regarding acceptance of a doctoral student will be made by the prospective professor. The Bengel Haus itself cannot award any academic degrees, but merely provides support to doctoral students in their research, similar to the Tyndale House in Cambridge, England. In cooperation with outside experts, the Bengel Haus supports research work in all theological disciplines.
6.3. The dean of the Department of Theology at the University of Tübingen will review academic transcripts of previous studies completed in theology by international students. This is especially true with respect to proficiencies in the classical languages, such as Biblical Hebrew, and classical Greek and Latin. After review by the dean, candidates may be required to do additional work and complete exams in these respective areas. However, after admission as a doctoral student, candidates are not required to take any additional doctoral courses or seminars. Dr. Deines will be glad to make contact with dean of the theology department and advise participants in other relevant questions of academic standing, visa application, etc.
